Unlock your iPhone 3G using “Yellowsn0w”

How to Unlock your iPhone 3G using the iPhone Dev Team’s Unlock, yellowsn0w

If your iPhone 3G is already jailbroken, jump to step 3 (you already knew that):

1. Update your iPhone 3G to 2.2 firmware via iTunes (to ensure you’ll be on baseband 02.28.00).
2. Jailbreak using QuickPwn 2.2 .
3. Launch Cydia –> click on Manage –> click on Sources –> click Edit –> click Add –> enter the following Cydia repository URL found here –> Click on Return to Cydia.
4. Click on Search. Type in “yellowsn0w”. Install yellowsn0w (it should be version 0.9.1, it was updated fairly quickly). Let it finish installing, exit Cydia.
5. Reboot your iPhone with foreign SIM installed…10 seconds later after reboot you should get a signal. If you don’t, try taking the SIM tray out then reinserting again.
6. That’s it! Your iPhone 3G is unlocked!

I installed yellowsn0w was able to pop in my du SIM card I was using in Dubai on my iPhone 2G. At first I quickly saw the “SIM Failure” message pop up then disappear quickly. The du SIM was able to pick up a signal! Success!

If you had success or some problems, let us know, but more important, let the Dev Team know by posting comments on their blog here. It’s imperative for them to get feedback in order to improve yellowsn0w to work for all carriers from around the world!

Big props to the entire iPhone Dev Team for their hard work. The entire globe is thanking them right about now!

Walmart has announced their iPhone pricing and unfortuntly they are not $99 or 4GB. They are $197 for 8GB and $297 for 16GB. Although that might sound like bad news, you can still get iPhones for $99. AT&T is selling refurbished iPhones for $99 for 8GB and $199 for 16GB through December 31st. So Good Luck!

Top 10 iPhone Apps of 2008

EasyWriter: It seems simple—you can type URLs in landscape mode with its larger, more luxuriously spaced keyboard. Why not emails? EasyWriter solved it. Free; $2.99 for Pro edition

Facebook: For Facebookers (um, everyone, right?) it’s essential—a beautifully designed, uber-functional implementation that’s always with you. Free

EverNote: Already a popular web service and found on other devices, Evernote does something that every location-aware cameraphone should be able to do: quickly take and store geotagged photos so you can remember stuff. Free

Google Mobile: Google Mobile was a solid app (but not particularly essential)—and then came voice search. Free

RjDj: A totally unique music application that processes sound from your environment and replays it according to a set program, creating a trippy, always-evolving soundscape. Free to try; $2.99 expanded version

VLC Remote: One of the first apps we loved was the iTunes Remote—now, the Swiss army knife of media players VLC has one of its very own. Free ad-supported simple version; $1.99 for more controls and no ads

Wikipedia Mobile: Finally, the definitive Wikipedia reader for the iPhone. $2.99

Night Camera: Thanks to its accelerometer, your iPhone knows when it’s being jiggled. Night Camera, simply and ingeniously, uses this data to make your low-light picture clearer. $0.99

Tweetie: Twitter apps: there are a lot of ‘em. Tweetie, though, is the closest you’ll get to the Twitter desktop experience, and therefore our best of. $2.99

Recorder: While not the sexiest apps, a good solid voice recorder can be incredibly handy—especially if you are a handsome FBI investigator in the town of Twin Peaks. $0.99
